double your pleasure.

cameron diaz and kate winslet, stars of the holiday, share cover duties on the january issue of harper's bazaar. inside, the two talk to holiday director nancy meyers about their men (justin timberlake and director sam mendes, respectively), skinny jeans (guess who cameron's faves are by?), and botox and plastic surgery. i guess bazaar thought cameron or kate couldn't handle things on their own (and they didn't know that w's double feature cover of meryl streep and lindsay lohan was their worst seller of the year) but no matter: the girls look great in their shots and really exude confidence in themselves. neither makes excuses for who they are, and that's something to celebrate.

also in the issue are bazaar's best bets from the s/s collections:

the trends from new york by anthony ward featuring flavia

the news from paris by nathaniel goldberg with jessica stam and hilary rhoda

highlights from milan by daniel jackson featuring snejana

all in all, a solid january issue in a month when mags are traditionally thin. the stam/hilary ed is top notch, and snejana also looks gorgeous in her ed.

perfectly suited for the milkmaid look.

fresh off his unveiling of dakota fanning as the face of his namesake collection, marc jacobs released the first image of the s/s vuitton campaign. shot by mert and marcus and styled by katie grand, scarlett johansson does a pretty good job of capturing the essence of the vuitton collection:
With the Spring/Summer 2007 collection, we wanted to create something very fresh, very feminine, very pretty...And when it came time for the advertising campaign, we thought who would best represent this – someone young and fresh and slightly coquettish, with gorgeous skin and a figure made to wear bustier dresses and gold-heeled shoes, and we came up with Scarlett Johansson.

overall, it's a nice campaign and the styling/hair/makeup works, but i have a feeling that it could have been stronger. i think it's the variety of shots that isn't working for me...the first image above is really nice with the cotton plaid bra and biking, but the close up images don't work as well. i would have loved to have seen dita von tesse in these ads...

killing me softly.

i was starting to get a bit anxious wondering who was going to be on the cover of january's W. i thought the reason i hadn't heard about the cover is because it would be *gasp* a model! i know...what was i thinking? but W has a history of mixing it up every so often with a shot of kate, gisele, natalia or karen elson, but not so for january. the cover features factory girl star sienna miller, who is continuing to milk her 15 minutes of fame.

in the pics, she goes from looking vaguely pretty to slight coquette-ish to a dead ringer for naomi watts. the accompanying article is also a snore, but i am excited to read the article of san francisco's society scene...maybe they'll be a photo of my new style icon, victoria traina.

a rose by any other name...

a few months ago, she had a baby. now karen elson is back, looking as gorgeous as ever on the cover of december's vogue italia. also in the issue is an editorial with doutzen kroes shot by patrick demarchelier, another with stella tennant shot by paolo roversi, and vogue italia's annual new models supplement. another bonus is a book called "book pirelli vol. 1", with stunning pics of kate, gisele, natalia vodianova, among others featured in the calendar.

marc making moves.

wwd is reporting that the f/w 07 marc by marc jacobs show will take place in london instead of new york.
"We have a really nice Marc by Marc business in Europe," Duffy said. "I always felt when we showed it in the U.S. we would do it the day after, because Marc had to get back to Paris for Louis Vuitton. I always felt bad, because Marc by Marc has such a strong identity but would always get lumped in with the Collection show. I also always wanted to show in Europe."
the show, to be held on February 16, which would coincide with the opening of the first marc jacobs collection store in london. this is good for london fashion week, which has seen a resurgence of sorts with emporio armani presenting there last season, and some hot designers like christopher kane and giles deacon becoming must-sees.

------------------

also in the article, duffy talked about the s/s 07 campaign, shot last month by regular photographer juergen teller and featuring pint-sized star dakota fanning.
"Marc loves her as a character and thinks she is beautiful and a great actress," said Robert Duffy, president. "He loved the idea of having this young, small girl in the clothes, and we made them in her size to shoot her in."
i actually think she looks adorable, and marc/juergen/venetia scott (marc's longtime stylist) took special care not to make her appear too grown up. chalk it up as another quirky and original marc jacobs ad campaign.

your 15 minutes are up.

if there was one fall/winter collection that i couldn't stand, it was gucci. frida giannini took tom ford for gucci's elegant decadent 70s and donatella versace's over the top 80s dynasty, put them in a mixer, threw in red and purple tights and some missoni prints, and somehow celebrities ate it up.

exhibit a: carmen kass and kiera knightley. carmen is a professional, so she manages to make this dress look ok, but on kiera, it looks disatrous, showing off her bony chest. monica did a better job with the shorter version of this dress. the red also works against her skintone.

exhibit b: tracee ellis ross is actually working this look, much better than gemma. she has the confidence and stature to pull this off, even though the dress isn't that flattering. see jessica simpson, in the shorter version. i think the longer version would have worked better on jessica; she's too short to pull off this length.

exhibit c: kate bosworth at the superman premiere. she is also rocking this dress, and its flawless open back. the christian louboutin gwenissima pumps are a great touch.

exhibit d: finally, there's "the dress," the gold knit weave deep v-neck mini that was first spotted on lindsay lohan. since then, it has appeared on everyone from nicole from the pussycat dolls to jade jagger, with varying degrees of success. thankfully, now that gucci's f/w sale starts tomorrow and resort merchandise arriving, this collection will die a slow, painful death (or those of you that love it will start picking up pieces at 40% off!)

bringing sexy back.

a beautiful penelope cruz is on the cover of the t holiday edition, photographed by raymond meier. not normally a fan of hers, i have to say she looks wonderful on the cover and in the accompanying shots. the new york times style magazine also features a gorgeous editorial with maria dvirnik photographed by yelena yemchuk.

also in the issue is a peek inside kirna zabĂȘte, the hip soho boutique, an interview with john galliano on his inspiration behind the dior saddle bag, and an interactive feature narrated by marisa berenson on thirteen stylish individuals, including stephanie seymour, kelis, zooey and emily deschanel, and the narrator herself.
